How do I know if this course is right for me?
This course is designed to give you the structure and support of a group studying experience as well as regular practice with the types of questions you are likely to find on the exam. If you are looking for a good review of the concepts you will be tested on, this course is designed to help you both study on your own and have a resource for the questions that come up in your studying. If it has been a while since you took this type of exam, repeated practice with the type of complex multiple choice questions you will find on the test will also be very helpful simply from the perspective of refining your test-taking ability. We also spend a fair bit of time “deconstructing” questions and discussing how different concepts might be tested, as well as sharing mnemonic strategies.

If you have difficulty sticking to timelines for your studying, or have anxiety about taking the exam, this course is designed to help you! There are clear contingencies for sticking to your planned study schedule, which many busy professionals find very helpful. You will have the opportunity to discuss both “content” concerns with regards to the concepts on the task list as well as test-taking concerns and studying strategies. I am online daily to provide feedback and answer questions, responding to all student postings. If you have anxiety about taking the exam, you will also likely find the support of the larger group to be very helpful. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about whether or not this course is right for you, or if you would like to connect with former students about their experiences.

What are the prerequisites for taking this course?

This course assumes that you have already fulfilled all the coursework and experience requirements to take the BACB exam at either the BCBA or BCABA level.

What equipment/computer skills do I need to take this course?
This course is taught entirely online through the Canvas/Instructure system. You do not need to have exceptional computer skills, as the Canvas system is fairly easy to navigate. You do need to have a reliable computer and internet connection, and a relatively up-to-date internet browser. You will also want to have access to a reasonably comprehensive textbook in behavior analysis (such as Cooper, Heron, and Heward’s Applied Behavior Analysis).

How much time should I expect to spend on the course activities?
The time students spend is highly variable, since you will be tailoring the amount of studying you do to your own skill and knowledge level. If you complete all course activities, you can expect to spend an hour or so reviewing the task list and writing the assigned questions, an hour in the weekly chat, an hour or so reviewing and responding to other students’ questions on the discussion board, and an hour taking sample quizzes. You will then need to spend as much additional studying time as necessary to develop SAFMEDS and become fluent in any terminology you are less familiar with (perhaps an hour a week on developing SAFMEDS and then a few minutes every day), and as much additional time as is necessary to review references for less familiar concepts so that you can write your assigned questions and/or so that you can correct your errors on weekly quizzes. Most students find that spending about 10-15 hours per week studying and completing the course exercises is adequate; however, some students have spent considerably more time than this while others choose to focus only on selected areas of the task list that they are less sure of and thus spend considerably less time.

Do I have to be online at certain times?

The only “live” or “synchronous” communication that is part of this course are the weekly web conferences. These are generally scheduled on Tuesdays from 8:30-9:30 pm Eastern time (see current syllabus). If you are not able to participate at this time, the conferences are recorded and can be reviewed for up to two weeks following the class.

Can this course be used to meet the education requirements of the BACB?
No, you must fulfill the education requirements through coursework from accredited universities that meet the content area requirements as outlined by the BACB. There is a list of pre-approved courses on the BACB website, many of which are online.

If I am not planning to take the exam in the next exam period, should I take this course now or wait?
That depends entirely on your own knowledge of how much you need to study. In general, I recommend that students wait to take the course until they are planning to take the exam. If you are a busy professional with many tasks competing for your time, devoting time to studying requires a fairly high level of motivation… the motivating operation of the approaching exam is often necessary for students to engage in adequate studying behavior, including the assignments of the course.
